Preparing the Abstract

Character Limit-
Limited to 2,300 characters (no including spaces) in Times New Roman, 10 point font.
If including table, chart or graph, character limit will be approximately 1,700 characters depending on the size of the graph. 

Brand Names / Support-
Do not use brand names in the abstract.  Indicate grant funding information at the bottom of the abstract, indented three (3) spaces.

Title
The title should be brief (limited to 15 words) and typed in ALL CAPS.



Authors
Type the initials and last names of the authors.  Type the presenting author first.  Do not include degrees or titles.  Fellows of ACSM should use FACSM after their name.
 


Affiliations
Type the affiliation where the research was done.  Give only the name of the institution, city, and state.



Author E-mail and Sponsored Fellow Notation
Include the corresponding author e-mail address.  If a Fellow sponsors without authoring or co-authoring the abstract, the final piece of information in the heading must be: (Sponsor: Fellow's name, FACSM)



Text
The abstract must be informative, including a statement of the study's specific PURPOSE, METHODS, summary of RESULTS, and CONCLUSION statement using these headings in the MSSE abstract format. 

Nonconforming abstracts will be rejected.

Use standard abbreviations, symbols, and punctuation as used in MSSE. When using abbreviations in the body of the abstract, spell out in full the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.

 

Human studies must comply with the ACSM statement regarding the use of human participants and informed consent (MSSE Vol. 30, No. 7, July 1998, “Policy Statement Regarding the Use of Human Subjects and Informed Consent.”)

 

Animal studies must comply with the NIH guidelines regarding the use of animals.

To ensure consistency and clarity, it is directed that authors use the terms defined by MSSE, “Information for the Authors,” while utilizing the units of measurement of the Systeme International de’Unite (SI).
